Moanalua High School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges. The school occupies about 30 acres on a hill overlooking the Salt Lake and Moanalua area of Honolulu, Hawaii. The enrollment is approximately 2,000 students in grades 9 to 12. Moanalua High School was honored as “Hawaii’s Best Public High School” by Honolulu Magazine in May 2003. The Music Department offers a wide range of courses including Marching Band, Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Chorus, Ukulele, Piano and Music Theory. The department has over 500 members, approximately 1 in every 4 students at Moanalua are a part of the Music Department.
Students from the Moanalua High School Music Department have traveled extensively, both nationally and internationally. Students have performed in various places such as London, Japan, and Australia. The Symphony Orchestra holds the distinction of being the first student orchestra to be formally invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York by the Carnegie Hall Corporation in 1998. The orchestra made its second appearance at Carnegie Hall in the Spring of 2013 to standing ovations. The orchestra most recently appeared at the American String Teachers Association National Festival Orchestra in Atlanta Georgia where they earned the title of Grand National Champions.
